Churchill Downs hosts the 1 1/4 mile race known as “The Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sports”; also called “The Run for the Roses” for the blanket of roses draped over the winner. It is the first leg of the Triple Crown, and is followed by the Preakness Stakes, then the Belmont Stakes, has been run every consecutive year since 1875. The Kentucky Derby is the longest continually running sporting event in America.

The Longines Kentucky Oaks is held each year during Kentucky Derby week. It is America’s premier race for 3-year old fillies, and is a $1 Million Grade stakes race. Also named "lillies for the fillies", the winner of the race receives a garland of lillies. This race is one of the longest continually held races in American history, having been established in 1875 by Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark.
